Same trip either way: the islands and prices mirror, so choose the direction that fits your flights in and out

It is the same trip either way. Every expedition crosses the same chain of islands, El Nido’s east coast, Linapacan, Culion and Busuanga, just in mirror order, and most operators charge the same in both directions: We Are Juan was $311 per person each way on dates we checked in late October 2026, and Keelooma and Big Dream Boatman publish one price for both. So choose the direction your flights decide. If you arrive through Puerto Princesa, start in El Nido and sail to Coron, so you only do the 5 to 6 hour van ride once. If you are flying onward to Caticlan or Tagbilaran, finish in El Nido, whose airport has direct routes to both. If neither applies, pick the direction with the departure date and operator you like best.

The flights decide it

Both ends have small airports, and they do not serve the same places. Here is what the routes looked like in 2026:

El Nido (Lio Airport, ENI)Coron (Busuanga Airport, USU)
Distance to townAbout 4 kmAbout 45 minutes by van
Direct routes listedClark, Cebu, Busuanga, Caticlan, Tagbilaran (all Cebgo)Cebu and Clark (Cebgo, PAL Express, Sunlight Air), plus El Nido
From ManilaTurboprops moved to Clark (reported 29 March 2026), about 1 h 35 minNo confirmed direct Manila flight; route through Clark or Cebu
Road alternativePuerto Princesa airport, then 5 to 5.5 hours by shared van (Castaway says 5 to 6)None; Coron is on an island

Two consequences follow. First, Puerto Princesa only works at the El Nido end. If you fly into Puerto Princesa, the natural plan is van to El Nido, expedition to Coron, then fly out of Busuanga via Cebu or Clark. Doing it the other way means sailing to El Nido and then facing the long van ride south to catch your flight. Second, El Nido has more onward options. Lio lists direct Cebgo routes to Caticlan and Tagbilaran, which Busuanga does not, so finishing in El Nido suits a trip that continues to either.

Lio’s flights are small turboprops. Suroy.ph reported 15 kg checked baggage plus 7 kg cabin on the Clark route, so pack with that in mind if El Nido is your exit. Keelooma warns that small-aircraft flights to both Lio and Busuanga are cancelled in poor visibility.

What changes with the direction

The islands do not change, but the logistics at each end do.

The finish matters most on the last day. Arriving in Coron, you step off near town. Arriving in El Nido, you land on the far side of the peninsula and still have a road transfer to town, which most listings include. Either way, do not plan a flight for the arrival evening. Sea Quest’s 5-day listing says so directly.

The environmental fees also follow you around. El Nido charges PHP 400 per person and Coron PHP 200, and several listings, including Keelooma’s, leave them out. Coron’s fee is collected on arrival, at the airport or the port, so a traveller who flew into Coron has usually already paid it. If you have been island-hopping in El Nido before the trip, keep your El Nido receipt: operators disagree on how many days it stays valid, so ask yours.

Which operators run which way

Most operators sail both directions, but the marketplace listings are split, and the strongest review record is not the same on both sides.

Prices are per person on the dates we checked in late October 2026; Viator figures are its headline from-price. If you have already settled on Castaway, note that its Coron departure was cheaper and better rated than its El Nido one when we checked. If you want the deepest review record, We Are Juan’s El Nido departure has more than three times as many reviews as its Coron trip, though both average 4.8.

Fitting day tours around the expedition

The expeditions skip the famous sights at both ends. Keelooma says its trip visits neither El Nido’s lagoons nor Coron’s lakes. So plan a day tour in whichever town gives you a spare day:

  • Starting in Coron, you need to be in town for the evening briefing anyway, which makes the day before a natural slot for Coron’s Ultimate Tour, $42 on the date we checked.
  • Finishing in El Nido, a day after the trip suits El Nido Tour C, $29 on the date we checked, and El Nido’s flights mean you can leave the following day.

Our Coron island-hopping and El Nido island-hopping guides compare the options, and the Coron and El Nido hotel guides cover the nights either side.

A quick decision guide

  • Flying into Puerto Princesa: El Nido to Coron. Book a Puerto Princesa to El Nido van (rated 3.4 from 623 reviews, so read them) or a shared van in town, and allow most of a day for it.
  • Continuing to Caticlan or Tagbilaran: Coron to El Nido, then fly from Lio.
  • Flying in and out via Clark or Cebu: either way works. Choose by operator and date.
  • Short on time at the end of your trip: end in Coron, where the boat lands close to town and the airport is 45 minutes away.
  • Weather worries: no source we found says either direction is calmer. Leave a spare day before any international flight whichever way you go, as Tao and travel guides recommend. Our best time guide covers the seasons.
