Fast ferry about 3.5 hours against an expedition of 3 days and 2 nights between Coron and El Nido

Yes, the expedition is worth it if you can give it three days and you want the islands, not just the destination. The fast ferry between Coron and El Nido takes about 3.5 hours and costs roughly PHP 2,750 to 3,250 in 2026. A 3-day, 2-night expedition booked direct costs about PHP 16,000 to 19,800 per person, roughly six times as much, but that price also covers two nights’ accommodation, every meal, a guide and two or three snorkelling stops a day through Linapacan and Culion, which the ferry sails straight past. Take the ferry if you are short of days, need a private bathroom and a proper bed, are travelling with young children, or mainly want the famous lagoons and lakes, which the expeditions do not visit.

Transport or the trip itself

Big Dream Boatman puts the difference in one line on its own site: “A ferry is transport, this is the trip itself.” That is the real decision. You are not choosing between two ways of crossing. You are choosing whether to spend three days of your holiday on the crossing.

What the extra money buys: cost per day

The ferry fare is the hardest number on this page to pin down. Recent sources give different ranges: Pamasahe listed Phimal at PHP 1,828 in August 2026, bustickets.ph listed Montenegro at PHP 1,760 without a date, The Discoveries Of gave PHP 1,600 to 3,250 on 17 October 2026, El Nido Insights gave PHP 2,989 to 3,210 in late September, and suroy.ph gave PHP 2,750 to 3,250 in August. We use PHP 2,750 to 3,250 because the three most recent sources overlap there. Check the fare when you buy.

The expedition prices are firmer, because the operators publish them. On their own sites, We Are Juan shows PHP 16,000 to 19,000 depending on date, Castaway from PHP 17,000, Sea Nomads PHP 18,000 and Keelooma PHP 19,000, rising to PHP 19,800 from 1 November 2026. On GetYourGuide, on dates we checked in late October 2026, Exodus Expedition from Coron was $281 per person, We Are Juan from El Nido $311 and Castaway from Coron $327.

Spread over three days, that works out as follows (our arithmetic):

Total per personPer day
Expedition booked directPHP 16,000 to 19,800About PHP 5,300 to 6,600
Expedition on GetYourGuide$281 to $368About $94 to $123
Fast ferryPHP 2,750 to 3,250One afternoon

So the expedition costs roughly PHP 13,000 to 17,000 more than the ferry ticket. That gap is smaller than it looks, because the ferry traveller still has to pay for two nights somewhere, two days of meals and, most likely, a day tour or two. On dates we checked, Coron’s Ultimate Tour was $42 and El Nido Tour C $29. On the expedition those days, beds and meals are already paid for.

Check what is excluded before comparing. Some listings leave out the local environmental fees, which are paid in cash: PHP 400 for El Nido and PHP 200 for Coron. Exodus, for example, excludes the El Nido and Linapacan fees, and Castaway includes Linapacan’s but not El Nido’s or Coron’s. Our price guide lists them listing by listing.

What you get that the ferry cannot give you

The ferry crosses open water in one go. The expedition stops two or three times a day at islands in Linapacan and Culion, then sleeps at a beach camp. Linapacan has a reputation for very clear water: a 2013 Daily News Dig list ranked its waters among 35 to swim in, and the operators repeat the claim in their marketing. Typical named stops include Ditaytayan Sandbar, Araw Beach, Cagdanao and Calibangbangan, and our itinerary guide shows them day by day.

The second thing you get is company. These are shared trips of up to 22 to 28 people depending on the listing, with group meals, bonfires and karaoke. The reviews keep returning to the crews and the food. One GetYourGuide reviewer on the We Are Juan El Nido trip, which holds 4.8 from 602 reviews, called it “honestly the highlight” of a 10-day Philippines trip.

What it costs you besides money

The expedition is a basic trip, and the operators say so. We Are Juan’s huts have a mattress, pillows, linen and a mosquito net but no fan, and toilets and showers are shared. Keelooma’s showers are cold bucket-and-dipper, and its camps have electricity for only four to five hours in the evening. Mobile signal is patchy to absent and there is no Wi-Fi. Your main luggage is stowed on the boat for the whole trip.

The boat hours are long, and the low-star reviews show where that hurts. Several reviewers on the busiest listings describe more passengers than seats, too little shade, an open deck with nowhere to shelter from rain, and stops that felt short. A small number describe a weather delay that kept them at a camp. These are a minority of reviews, but they are the realistic downside, and our reviews guide sets them out by operator.

Who should just take the ferry

Take the ferry if any of these apply:

  • You cannot spare three days plus the evening before. The expedition adds about two days to your trip compared with the ferry.
  • You are travelling with children. We Are Juan’s minimum age is 16 and Castaway’s trips are adults only. Keelooma accepts children from 5 and Big Dream Boatman from 12, so families have fewer choices.
  • You want a private bathroom, air conditioning or a real night’s sleep. Among the expeditions on our review pages, only Sea Quest’s 4-day trip includes an air-conditioned night, at $1,051 per person on 10 November 2026.
  • You get badly seasick. Castaway lists people prone to seasickness among those the trip does not suit.
  • The lagoons and lakes are the point. Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and El Nido’s lagoons are day-tour sites, not expedition stops. GetYourGuide also sells a Coron to El Nido package that bundles the ferry ticket, an air-conditioned hotel and an island tour.

If the ferry is cancelled, Cebgo flies between Lio and Busuanga in about 40 minutes, usually once a day, for roughly PHP 3,850 to 5,000. See our ferry guide for operators and booking.

Who should book the expedition

Book it if you have the days, can live with shared bathrooms, and want the middle of the route more than its two ends. Solo travellers do especially well, because the group is the point of the trip.

For a first choice, we’d pick We Are Juan for its review record, in either direction at the same price: El Nido to Coron or Coron to El Nido. Castaway suits travellers aged 18 and over who want a party atmosphere. Exodus had the lowest dated price in our check, but it has only 16 reviews, we could not find an operator website, and one reviewer reports being moved onto another company’s boat, so read our Exodus review first.
